Sa-smā-smiṃ-saṃ-sāsv attaṃ

When ‘sa’, ‘smā’, ‘smiṃ’, ‘saṃ’ and ‘sā’ follow, [there is] ‘a’.

[Sa-smā-smiṃ-saṃ-sāsu + attaṃ = 2 words]

Tassa sabbanāmassa takārassa sabbass’ eva attaṃ hoti vā sa smā smiṃ saṃ sā icc etesu sabbattha liṅgesu.

Assa, tassa; asmā, tasmā; asmiṃ, tasmiṃ; assaṃ, tassaṃ; assā, tassā.

Takārasse ti kimatthaṃ? Amussaṃ, amussā.

Etesv iti kimatthaṃ? Nesu, tesu.

When ‘sa’, ‘smā’, ‘smiṃ’, ‘saṃ’ and ‘sā’ follow, [there is] ‘a’.
Optionally, in all the genders, when the inflections ‘sa’, ‘smā’, ‘smiṃ’, ‘saṃ’ and ‘sā’ follow, the whole [base] “ta” of the pronoun “ta” becomes ‘a’.
  1. Assa = ta + sa (“ta” becomes “a” (§176); ‘s’ is inserted (§61)).
  2. Asmā = ta + smā (“ta” becomes “a” (§176)).
  3. Asmiṃ = ta + smiṃ (“ta” becomes “a” (§176)).
  4. Assaṃ = tā + smiṃ (‘ā’ of “tā” is named ‘gha’ (§60); ‘smiṃ’ becomes ‘saṃ’ (§179); ‘s’ is inserted (§62); ‘ā’ of “tā” is shortened (§66); “ta” becomes “a” (§176)).
  5. Assā = tā + sa (‘ā’ of “tā” is named ‘gha’ (§60); ‘sa’ becomes ‘sā’ (§179); ‘s’ is inserted (§62); ‘ā’ of “tā” is shortened (§66); “ta” becomes “a” (§176)).
