Na sismim anapuṃsakāni

When ‘si’ follows, the non-neuters, not [shortened].

85. 150. Na sismim anapuṃsakāni (239-48)

Sismiṃ anapuṃsakāni liṅgāni na rassam āpajjante.

Itthī, bhikkhunī, vadhū, daṇḍī, sayambhū.

Sismiṃ ti kimatthaṃ? Bhoti itthi, bothi vadhu, bho daṇḍi, bho sayambhu.

Anapuṃsakānī ti kimatthaṃ? Sukhakāri dānaṃ, sukhakāri sīlaṃ, sīghayāyi cittaṃ.

When ‘si’ follows, the non-neuters, not [shortened].
When ‘si’ follows, the non-neuter bases are not shortened.
  1. Itthī = itthī + si (‘ī’ is not shortened; ‘si’ is elided (§220)).

What is the purpose of saying “when ‘si’ [follows]”? [This sutta does not apply when ‘si’ does not follow, such as in] “bhoti itthi”, etc.

  1. Itthi = itthī + si (‘si’ is named ‘gha’ (§57); ‘ī’ is shortened (§245); ‘si’ is elided (§220)).

What is the purpose of saying “non-neuters”? [This sutta does not apply when they are neuter, such as in] “sukhakāri dānaṃ”, etc.

  1. Sukhakāri = sukhakārī + si (‘si’ is named ‘jha’ (§58); ‘ī’ is shortened by this sutta (§85); ‘si’ is elided (§220)).
