86. 227. Ubhādito nam innaṃ (341)

[Ubha-ādito + naṃ + innaṃ = 3 words]

Ubha icc evam ādito saṅkhyāto naṃvacanassa innaṃ hoti.

Ubhinnaṃ, duvinnaṃ.

Ubhādito ti kimatthaṃ? Ubhayesaṃ.

After “ubha” and others, ‘innaṃ’ [of] ‘naṃ’.
After the numerals “ubha” and others, the inflection ‘naṃ’ is substituted by ‘innaṃ’.
  1. Ubhinnaṃ = ubha + naṃ (‘naṃ’ is substituted by ‘innaṃ’ (§86); ‘a’ of “ubha” is elided (§83)).
  2. Duvinnaṃ = dvi + naṃ (‘naṃ’ is substituted by ‘innaṃ’ (§86); by “ca” (§132) “dvi” is substituted by “duvi”; ‘i’ of “duvi” is elided (§83)).

What is the purpose of saying “after ‘ubha’ and others”? [This sutta does not apply when there is no “ubha” and others, such as in] ubhayesaṃ.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
