Text and translation
Read in the chapter →69. 186. Ādito o ca (218)
Ādi icc etasmā smiṃ-vacanassa aṃ-o ādesā honti vā.
Ādiṃ, ādo.
Vā ti kimatthaṃ? Ādismiṃ, ādimhi nāthaṃ namassitvāna.
Caggahaṇena aññasmā pi smiṃvacanassa ā-o-aṃ ādesā honti. Divā ca ratto ca haranti ye baliṃ (Khu. i, 312). Bārāṇasiṃ ahu rājā (Khu. v, 380).
- Ādiṃ = ādi + smiṃ (‘smiṃ’ is substituted by ‘aṃ’ (§69); ‘i’ of “ādi” is named ‘jha’ (§58); ‘aṃ’ becomes ‘ṃ’ (§82)).
- Ādo = ādi + smiṃ (‘smiṃ’ is substituted by ‘o’ (§69); ‘i’ of “ādi” is elided (§83)).
What is the purpose of saying “optionally”? [This sutta does not apply in:] ādismiṃ, ādimhi nāthaṃ namassitvāna (having paid homage to the Lord, in the beginning).
And by taking “ca”, also after other words ‘smiṃ’ is substituted by ‘ā’, ‘o’ and ‘aṃ’.
- Divā = divā + smiṃ (‘smiṃ’ is substituted by ‘ā’ (§69); ‘ā’ of “divā” is elided (§83)).
- Ratto = ratti + smiṃ (‘smiṃ’ is substituted by ‘o’ (§69); ‘i’ of “ratti” is elided (§83)).
- Bārāṇasiṃ = Bārāṇasī + smiṃ (‘smiṃ’ is substituted by ‘aṃ’ (§69); ‘ī’ of “Bārāṇasī” is shortened (§84); ‘aṃ’ becomes ‘ṃ’ (§82)).
“Divā ca ratto ca haranti ye baliṃ” (those who by day and by night bring offerings). “Bārāṇasiṃ ahu rājā” (there was a king in Vārāṇasī).
Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
