102. 202. Sabbanāmānaṃ naṃmhi ca (270)

[Sabbanāmānaṃ + naṃmhi + ca = 3 words]

Sabbesaṃ sabbanāmānaṃ anto akāro ettam āpajjate naṃmhi vibhattimhi.

Sabbesaṃ, sabbesānaṃ; yesaṃ, yesānaṃ; tesaṃ, tesānaṃ; imesaṃ, imesānaṃ; kesaṃ, kesānaṃ; itaresaṃ, itaresānaṃ; katamesaṃ, katamesānaṃ.

Sabbanāmānam iti kimatthaṃ? Buddhānaṃ Bhagavantānaṃ āciṇṇasamāciṇṇo (Vin. i, 114).

Akāro ti kimatthaṃ? Amūsaṃ, amūsānaṃ.

Naṃmhi ti kimatthaṃ? Sabbe, ime.

Caggahaṇam anukaḍḍhanatthaṃ.

And when ‘naṃ’ follows, of all the pronouns.
When the inflection ‘naṃ’ follows, the letter ‘a’, which is the end vowel of all the pronouns, becomes ‘e’.
  1. Sabbesaṃ = sabba + naṃ (‘a’ becomes ‘e’ (§102); ‘naṃ’ is substituted by ‘saṃ’ (§168)).
  2. The formation of the rest of the examples is similar to the previous one.

What is the purpose of saying “of [all the] pronouns”? [This sutta does not apply when there are no pronouns, such as in] “Buddhānaṃ Bhagavantānaṃ āciṇṇasamāciṇṇo”.

What is the purpose of saying “the letter ‘a’”? [This sutta does not apply when there is no ‘a’, such as in] amūsaṃ, amūsānaṃ.

What is the purpose of saying “when ‘naṃ’ follows”? [This sutta does not apply when ‘naṃ’ does not follow, such as in] sabbe, ime.

Sabbe = sabba + yo (here ‘a’ does not become ‘e’; rather, ‘yo’ becomes ‘e’ by §164).

“Ca” is for dragging.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
