Sabbesaṃ sabbanāmānaṃ akārato yo paṭhamo ettam āpajjate.
Sabbe, ye, te, ke, tumhe, amhe, ime.
Sabbanāmā ti kimatthaṃ? Devā, asurā, nāgā, gandhabbā, manussā.
Akārato ti kimatthaṃ? Amū purisā tiṭṭhanti.
Yo ti kimatthaṃ? Sabbo, yo, so, ko, ayaṃ.
Paṭhamaggahaṇaṃ uttarasuttatthaṃ.
- Sabbe = sabba + yo (‘yo’ becomes ‘e’ (§164); ‘a’ is elided (§83)).
- Ye = ya + yo (‘yo’ becomes ‘e’ (§164); ‘a’ is elided (§83)).
- Te = ta + yo (‘yo’ is substituted by ‘e’ (§164); ‘a’ is elided (§83)).
What is the purpose of saying “all the pronouns”? [This sutta does not apply when there are no pronouns, such as in:] Devā, asurā, nāgā, gandhabbā, manussā.
What is the purpose of saying “after the letter ‘a’”? [This sutta does not apply when there is no ‘a’, such as in:] Amū purisā tiṭṭhanti.
What is the purpose of saying “[the first inflection] ‘yo’”? [This sutta does not apply when there is no ‘yo’, such as in:] Sabbo, yo, so, ko, ayaṃ.
