163. 240. Sass’ aṃ (346)

[Sassa + aṃ = 2 words]

Tehi tumha-amhehi sassa vibhattissa aṃ-ādeso hoti vā.

Tumhaṃ dīyate, tava dīyate. Tumhaṃ pariggaho, tava pariggaho. Amhaṃ dīyate, mama dīyate. Amhaṃ pariggaho, mama pariggaho.

Sasse ti kimatthaṃ? Tumhesu, amhesu.

‘Aṃ’ of ‘sa’.
Optionally, after [the bases] “tumha” and “amha”, the inflection ‘sa’ is substituted by ‘aṃ’.
  1. Tumhaṃ = tumha + sa (‘sa’ is substituted by ‘aṃ’ (§163); ‘a’ is elided (§83)).

What is the purpose of saying “of ‘sa’”? [This sutta does not apply when there is no ‘sa’, such as in:] Tumhesu, amhesu.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
