[Sabbassa + vā + aṃ-sesu = 3 words]

Sabbass’ eva ntupaccayassa attaṃ hoti vā aṃ sa icc etesu.

Satimaṃ bhikkhuṃ, satimantaṃ bhikkhuṃ vā. Bandhumaṃ rājānaṃ, bandhumantaṃ rājānaṃ vā (D. ii, 14). Satimassa bhikkhuno, satimato bhikkhuno vā. Bandhumassa rañño (D. ii, 6) suṅkaṃ. Bandhumato rañño (D. ii, 13) vā suṅkaṃ deti.

Etesv iti kimatthaṃ? Satimā bhikkhu. Bandhumā rājā.

Optionally, when ‘aṃ’ and ‘sa’ follow, [there is ‘a’] of the whole [‘ntu’].
Optionally, when ‘aṃ’ and ‘sa’ follow, there is ‘a’ of the whole suffix ‘ntu’.
  1. Satimaṃ = satimantu + aṃ (‘ntu’ becomes ‘a’ (§93); ‘a’ is elided (§83); ‘aṃ’ becomes ‘ṃ’ (§82)).
  2. Satimassa = satimantu + sa (‘ntu’ becomes ‘a’ (§93); ‘a’ is elided (§83); ‘s’ is inserted (§61)).

What is the purpose of saying “when these follow”? [This sutta does not apply when ‘aṃ’ and ‘sa’ do not follow, such as in] satimā bhikkhu, bandhumā rājā.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
