And when a consonant follows.
When a consonant follows, sometimes the niggahita comes to elision.
Examples: “Ariyasaccāna’ dassanaṃ”, “etaṃ buddhāna’ sāsanaṃ”.

Ariyasaccāna’ dassanaṃ: ariyasaccānaṃ dassanaṃ; ariyasaccāna dassanaṃ (§39); ariyasaccānadassanaṃ (§11); ariyasaccāna’ dassanaṃ (ME).

Buddhāna’ sāsanaṃ: buddhānaṃ sāsanaṃ; buddhāna sāsanaṃ (§39); buddhānasāsanaṃ (§11); buddhāna’ sāsanaṃ (ME).

Why say “sometimes”? [To prevent the operation of this rule in the following examples] “Etaṃ maṅgalam uttamaṃ”, “taṃ vo vadāmi bhaddante”.

Etaṃ maṅgalam. Here the rule does not apply.

Taṃ vo. Here the rule does not apply.
