Puma icc etassa anto lopam āpajjate liṅgādīsu parapadesu samāsesu.
Pulliṅgaṃ, pumbhāvo, puṅkokilo.
Pumasse ti kimatthaṃ? Itthiliṅgaṃ, napuṃsakaliṅgaṃ.
Liṅgādīsv iti kimatthaṃ? Pumitthī.
Samāsesu ti kimatthaṃ? Pumassa liṅgaṃ.
- Pulliṅgaṃ = puma + liṅgaṃ (‘a’ of “puma” is elided (§222); ‘m’ is substituted by ‘ṃ’ (§82); ‘ṃ’ is substituted by ‘l’ (“vā” in §31)).
- Pumbhāvo = puma + bhāvo (‘a’ of “puma” is elided (§222); ‘m’ is substituted by ‘ṃ’ (§82); ‘ṃ’ is substituted by ‘m’ (§31)).
- Puṅkokilo = puma + kokilo (‘a’ of “puma” is elided (§222); ‘m’ is substituted by ‘ṃ’ (§82); ‘ṃ’ is substituted by ‘ṅ’ (§31)).
What is the purpose of saying “of ‘puma’”? [This sutta does not apply when there is no “puma”, such as in:] itthiliṅgaṃ, napuṃsakaliṅgaṃ.
