223. 188. Aṃ yam īto pasaññato (450)

[Aṃ + yaṃ + īto + pasaññato = 4 words]

Aṃvacanassa yaṃ hoti vā īto pasaññato. Itthiyaṃ, itthiṃ.

Pasaññato ti kimatthaṃ? Daṇḍinaṃ, bhoginaṃ.

Am iti kimatthaṃ? Itthīhi.

After ‘ī’ named ‘pa’, ‘aṃ’ [becomes] ‘yaṃ’.
Optionally, after ‘ī’ named ‘pa’, ‘aṃ’ becomes ‘yaṃ’.
  1. Itthiyaṃ = itthī + aṃ (‘ī’ is named ‘pa’ (§59); ‘aṃ’ is substituted by ‘yaṃ’ (§223); ‘ī’ is shortened (§84)).
  2. Itthiṃ = itthī + aṃ (‘ī’ of “itthī” is shortened (§84); ‘aṃ’ becomes ‘ṃ’ (§82)).

What is the purpose of saying “named ‘pa’”? [This sutta does not apply when there is no ‘pa’, such as in:] daṇḍinaṃ, bhoginaṃ.

What is the purpose of saying ‘aṃ’? [This sutta does not apply when there is no ‘aṃ’, such as in:] itthīhi.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
