215. 141. Jha-lato ca (442)

[Jha-lato + ca = 2 words]

Jha la icc etehi smāvacanassa nā hoti.

Agginā, daṇḍinā, bhikkhunā, sayambhunā.

Smā ti kimatthaṃ? Aggayo, munayo, isayo.

And after ‘jha’ and ‘la’.
After ‘jha’ and ‘la’, the inflection ‘smā’ becomes ‘nā’.
  1. Agginā = aggi + smā (‘i’ is named ‘jha’ (§58); ‘smā’ is substituted by ‘nā’ (§215)).
  2. Daṇḍinā = daṇḍī + smā (‘ī’ is named ‘jha’ (§58); ‘ī’ is shortened (§84); ‘smā’ is substituted by ‘nā’ (§215)).
  3. Bhikkhunā = bhikkhu + smā (‘u’ is named ‘la’ (§58); ‘smā’ is substituted by ‘nā’ (§215)).
  4. Sayambhunā = sayambhū + smā (‘ū’ is named ‘la’ (§58); ‘ū’ is shortened (§84); ‘smā’ is substituted by ‘nā’ (§215)).

What is the purpose of saying ‘smā’? [This sutta does not apply when ‘smā’ does not follow, such as in:] aggayo, munayo, isayo.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
