100. 214. Na t’-imehi katākārehi (267)

[Na + ta-imehi + kata-ākārehi = 3 words]

Ta ima icc etehi katākārehi smā-smiṃnaṃ mhā-mhi icc ete ādesā n’ eva honti.

Asmā ṭhāna bhayaṃ uppajjati; asmiṃ ṭhāne bhayaṃ tiṭṭhati; asmā; asmiṃ.

Katākārehī ti kimatthaṃ? Tamhā, tamhi, imamhā, imamhi.

When “ta” and “ima” become ‘a’, no [substitution].
When “ta” and “ima” become ‘a’, ‘smā’ and ‘smiṃ’ are not substituted by ‘mhā’ and ‘mhi’.
  1. Asmā = ta + smā (‘ta’ becomes ‘a’ (§176); ‘smā’ does not become ‘mhā’ (§100)).
  2. Asmiṃ = ta + smiṃ (‘ta’ becomes ‘a’ (§176); ‘smiṃ’ does not become ‘mhi’ (§100)).
  1. Asmā = ima + smā (“ima” becomes ‘a’ (§177); ‘smā’ does not become ‘mhā’ (§100)).
  2. Asmiṃ = ima + smiṃ (“ima” becomes ‘a’ (§177); ‘smiṃ’ does not become ‘mhi’ (§100)).

What is the purpose of saying “become ‘a’”? [This sutta does not apply when ‘ta’ and ‘ima’ do not become ‘a’, such as in] tamhā, tamhi, imamhā, imamhi.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
