99. 81. Smā-hi-smiṃnaṃ mhā-bhi-mhi vā (265-6)

[Smā-hi-smiṃnaṃ + mhā-bhi-mhi + vā = 3 words]

Sabbato liṅgato smā hi smiṃ icc etesaṃ mhā bhi mhi icc ete ādesā honti vā yathāsaṅkhyaṃ.

Purisamhā, purisasmā; purisebhi, purisehi; purisamhi, purisasmiṃ.

Smā-hi-smiṃnam iti kimatthaṃ? Vaṇṇavantaṃ (Khu. i, 20) agandhakaṃ viruḷhapupphaṃ; mahantaṃ chattaṃ mahāchattaṃ; mahantaṃ dhajaṃ mahādhajaṃ.

Optionally, ‘mhā’, ‘bhi’ and ‘mhi’ of ‘smā’, ‘hi’ and ‘smiṃ’.
Optionally, after all the bases, ‘smā’, ‘hi’ and ‘smiṃ’ are substituted by ‘mhā’, ‘bhi’ and ‘mhi’ respectively.
  1. Purisamhā = purisa + smā (‘smā’ is substituted by ‘mhā’ (§99)).
  2. Purisebhi = purisa + hi (‘hi’ is substituted by ‘bhi’ (§99); ‘a’ of “purisa” becomes ‘e’ (§101)).
  3. Purisamhi = purisa + smiṃ (‘smiṃ’ is substituted by ‘mhi’ (§99)).

What is the purpose of saying “of ‘smā’, ‘hi’ and ‘smiṃ’”? [This sutta does not apply when there is no ‘smā’, ‘hi’ or ‘smiṃ’, such as in] vaṇṇavantaṃ agandhakaṃ viruḷhapupphaṃ, mahantaṃ chattaṃ mahāchattaṃ, mahantaṃ dhajaṃ mahādhajaṃ.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
