98. 189. Mātulādīnam ānattam īkāre (261)

[Mātulādīnaṃ + ānattaṃ + īkāre = 3 words]

Mātula icc evam ādīnaṃ anto ānattam āpajjate īkāre paccaye pare.

Mātulānī (Khu. i, 219), ayyakānī, varuṇānī.

Īkāre ti kimatthaṃ? Bhikkhunī, rājinī, jālinī, gahapatānī (Vin. i, 314).

Ānattaggahaṇena nadī icc etassa dīsaddassa jjo-jjā-ādesā honti saha vibhattiyā yo nā sa icc etesu. Najjo sandanti (S. ii, 178); najjā kataṃ taraṅgaṃ; najjā nerañjarāya tīre (Vin. iii, 1).

When ‘ī’ follows, ‘āna’ of “mātula”, etc.
When the suffix ‘ī’ follows, the end vowel of “mātula”, etc., becomes ‘āna’.
  1. Mātulānī = mātula + ī (‘a’ of “mātula” becomes ‘āna’ (§98); ‘a’ is elided (§83)).
  2. The formation of the rest of the examples is similar to the previous one.

What is the purpose of saying “when ‘ī’ follows”? [This sutta does not apply when ‘ī’ does not follow, such as in] bhikkhunī, rājinī, jālinī, gahapatānī.

By taking “ānatta”, when ‘yo’, ‘nā’ and ‘sa’ follow, ‘dī’ of “nadī” is substituted by ‘jjo’ and ‘jjā’ together with the inflections.

  1. Najjo = nadī + yo (‘dī’ together with the inflection ‘yo’ is substituted by ‘jjo’ (§98)).

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
