96. 148. Yosv akatarasso jho (259)

[Yosu + akatarasso + jho = 3 words]

Yosu akatarasso jho attam āpajjate.

Aggayo, munayo, isayo (Khu. ii, 88), gahapatayo (Khu. vi, 423).

Yosv iti kimatthaṃ? Aggīsu.

Akatarasso ti kimatthaṃ? Daṇḍino.

Jho ti kimatthaṃ? Rattiyo.

When ‘yo’ follows, ‘jha’ not shortened [becomes ‘a’].
When ‘yo’ follows, ‘jha’, which has not been shortened, becomes ‘a’.
  1. Aggayo = aggi + yo (‘i’ is named ‘jha’ (§58) and it has not been shortened; ‘i’ becomes ‘a’ (§96)).
  2. The formation of the rest of the examples is similar to the previous one.

What is the purpose of saying “when ‘yo’ [follows]”? [This sutta does not apply when ‘yo’ does not follow, such as in] aggīsu.

What is the purpose of saying “not shortened”? [This sutta does not apply when it has been shortened, such as in] daṇḍino.

Daṇḍino = daṇḍī + yo (‘ī’ of “daṇḍī” is shortened (§84); therefore this sutta does not operate).

What is the purpose of saying “‘jha’”? [This sutta does not apply when there is no ‘jha’, such as in] rattiyo.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
