72. 185. Pasaññassa ca (222)

[Pa-saññassa + ca = 2 words]

Pasaññassa ca ivaṇṇassa vibhattādese sare pare yakārādeso hoti.

Puthabyā; ratyā (Khu. vi, 315); matyā (Khu. vi, 39).

Sare ti kimatthaṃ? Puthaviyaṃ.

And of those named ‘pa’.
And when the vowel [‘ā’] which is the substitution of the inflection [‘smā’] follows, ‘i’ and ‘ī’, named ‘pa’, are substituted by ‘ya’.
  1. Puthabyā = puthavī + smā (‘ī’ of “puthavī” is named ‘pa’ (§59); ‘smā’ is substituted by ‘ā’ (§68); ‘ī’ is substituted by ‘ya’ (§72); ‘v’ is substituted by ‘b’ (§20)).
  2. The formation of ratyā and matyā is similar to the previous one.

What is the purpose of saying “when a vowel follows”? [This sutta does not apply when a vowel does not follow, such as in] puthaviyaṃ.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
