Yena vā kayirate taṃ karaṇaṃ

By means of this [one] does, that is “karaṇa”.

279. 292. Yena vā kayirate taṃ karaṇaṃ (552)

Yena vā kayirate, yena vā passati, yena vā suṇāti, taṃ kārakaṃ karaṇasaññaṃ hoti.

Dattena vīhiṃ lunāti; vāsiyā kaṭṭhaṃ tacchati; pharasunā rukkhaṃ chindati; kudālena pathaviṃ khaṇati; satthena kammaṃ karoti. Cakkhunā rūpaṃ passati (D. ii, 269); sotena saddaṃ suṇāti (D. ii, 269).

Karaṇam icc anena kvattho? Karaṇe tatiyā.

By means of this [one] does, that is “karaṇa”.
By means of this [one] does, by means of this [one] sees, by means of this [one] hears: that case has the name “karaṇa” (instrument).
  1. Dattena vīhiṃ lunāti ([he] cuts the paddy with the sickle).
  2. Vāsiyā kaṭṭhaṃ tacchati (chips the timber with the adze).
  3. Pharasunā rukkhaṃ chindati (cuts the tree with the hatchet).
  4. Kudālena pathaviṃ khaṇati (digs the earth with the spade).
  5. Satthena kammaṃ karoti (does the work with the knife).
  6. Cakkhunā rūpaṃ passati (sees a form with the eye).
  7. Sotena saddaṃ suṇāti (hears the sound with the ear).

What is the use of the name “karaṇa” (instrument)? For the use of the name “karaṇa” in the sutta “Karaṇe tatiyā” (§286). In the instrument, the third [inflection].
