26. 38. Rassaṃ (65, 179)

[Rassaṃ = 1 word]

Sarā kho byañjane pare kvaci (sometimes) rassaṃ papponti.

Bhovādi nāma so hoti (Khu. i, 71), yathā bhāvi guṇena so.

Kvacī ti kasmā? Sammā samādhi (Vin. iii, 14), sāvittī chandaso mukhaṃ, upanīyati jīvitam appam āyu (S. i, 2).

Short.
When a consonant follows, vowels sometimes become short.
Examples: “Bhovādi nāma so hoti”, “yathā bhāvi guṇena so”.
Bhovādi nāma
  1. bhovādī nāma
  2. bhovādi nāma (§26)
Bhāvi guṇena
  1. bhāvī guṇena
  2. bhāvi guṇena (§26)

Why say “sometimes”? [To prevent the operation of this rule in the following examples] “Sammā samādhi”, “sāvittī chandaso mukhaṃ”, “upanīyati jīvitam appam āyu”.

“Sammā samādhi.” Here and in the following counter-example, “sāvittī chandaso”, the final vowels do not become short.

“Upanīyati.” Here the ‘ī’ of “upanīyati” does not become short.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
