225. 151. Yonaṃ no (452)

[Yonaṃ + no = 2 words]

Sabbesaṃ yonaṃ jhato katarassā no hoti.

Daṇḍino bhogino; he daṇḍino, he bhogino.

Katarassā ti kimatthaṃ? Aggayo, munayo, isayo.

Jhato ti kimatthaṃ? Sayambhuno.

Yonan ti kimatthaṃ? Daṇḍinā, bhoginā.

‘No’ of ‘yo’.
After ‘jha’ that has been shortened, all the ‘yo’ become ‘no’.
  1. Daṇḍino = daṇḍī + yo (‘ī’ is named ‘jha’ (§58); ‘ī’ is shortened (§84); ‘yo’ is substituted by ‘no’ (§225)).
  2. Bhogino = bhogī + yo (‘ī’ is named ‘jha’ (§58); ‘ī’ is shortened (§84); ‘yo’ is substituted by ‘no’ (§225)).
  3. He daṇḍino, he bhogino: [vocatives, with the same sequence].

What is the purpose of saying “that has been shortened”? [This sutta does not apply when it has not been shortened, such as in:] aggayo, munayo, isayo.

What is the purpose of saying “after ‘jha’”? [This sutta does not apply when there is no ‘jha’, such as in:] Sayambhuno.

What is the purpose of saying “of ‘yo’”? [This sutta does not apply when there is no ‘yo’, such as in:] daṇḍinā, bhoginā.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
