Āro rassam ikāre

When ‘i’ follows, ‘āra’ [becomes] short.

208. 166. Āro rassam ikāre (424)

Ārādeso rassam āpajjate ikāre pare.

Satthari, pitari, mātari, dhītari, kattari, vattari.

When ‘i’ follows, ‘āra’ [becomes] short.
When ‘i’ follows, the substitution ‘āra’ is shortened.
  1. Satthari = satthu + smiṃ (‘u’ of “satthu” becomes ‘āra’ (§200); ‘smiṃ’ is substituted by ‘i’ (§206); ‘ā’ of “āra” is shortened (§208); ‘a’ is elided (§83)).
  2. Pitari = pitu + smiṃ (‘u’ of “pitu” becomes ‘āra’ (§200); ‘smiṃ’ is substituted by ‘i’ (§206); ‘ā’ of “āra” is shortened (§208); ‘a’ is elided (§83)).
