202. 164. Satthun’ attañ ca (417)

[Satthunaṃ + attaṃ + ca = 3 words]

Tassa satthusaddassa anto attam āpajjate vā naṃmhi vibhattimhi.

Satthānaṃ, pitānaṃ, mātānaṃ, bhātānaṃ, kattānaṃ.

Vā ti kimatthaṃ? Satthārānaṃ, pitarānaṃ, mātarānaṃ, bhātarānaṃ, dhītarānaṃ.

Caggahaṇam aññesam pi saṅgahaṇatthaṃ.

And ‘a’ of “satthu”.
Optionally, when the inflection ‘naṃ’ follows, the end [vowel] of the word “satthu” becomes ‘a’.
  1. Satthānaṃ = satthu + naṃ (‘u’ of “satthu” becomes ‘a’ (§202); ‘a’ is lengthened (§89)).
  2. Pitānaṃ = pitu + naṃ (‘u’ of “pitu” becomes ‘a’ (“ca” of §202); ‘a’ is lengthened (§89)).
  3. Mātānaṃ = mātu + naṃ (‘u’ of “mātu” becomes ‘a’ (“ca” of §202); ‘a’ is lengthened (§89)).
  4. Bhātānaṃ = bhātu + naṃ (‘u’ of “bhātu” becomes ‘a’ (“ca” of §202); ‘a’ is lengthened (§89)).
  5. Kattānaṃ = kattu + naṃ (‘u’ of “kattu” becomes ‘a’ (“ca” of §202); ‘a’ is lengthened (§89)).

What is the purpose of saying “optionally”? [To allow exceptions to this sutta, such as in:] satthārānaṃ, pitarānaṃ, mātarānaṃ, bhātarānaṃ, dhītarānaṃ.

The taking of “ca” is for including the others too.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
