172. 218. Anapuṃsakassāyaṃ simhi (306-7, 358)

[Anapuṃsakassa + ayaṃ + simhi = 3 words]

Imasaddassa sabbass’ eva anapuṃsakassa ayaṃ-ādeso hoti simhi vibhattimhi.

Ayaṃ puriso, ayaṃ itthī.

Anapuṃsakasse ti kimatthaṃ? Idaṃ cittaṃ tiṭṭhati.

Simhī ti kimatthaṃ? Imaṃ purisaṃ passasi tvaṃ.

When ‘si’ follows, [there is] ‘ayaṃ’ of the non-neuter [base].
When the inflection ‘si’ follows, the whole base “ima”, which is not neuter, is substituted by “ayaṃ”.
  1. Ayaṃ = ima + si (“ima” is substituted by “ayaṃ” (§172); ‘si’ is elided (§220)).
  1. Ayaṃ puriso (This man.)
  2. Ayaṃ itthī (This woman.)

What is the purpose of saying “of the non-neuter [base]”? [This sutta does not apply when the [base] is neuter, such as in:] Idaṃ cittaṃ tiṭṭhati (This mind remains.)

What is the purpose of saying “when ‘si’ follows”? [This sutta does not apply when ‘si’ does not follow, such as in:] Imaṃ purisaṃ passasi tvaṃ (You see this man.)

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
