171. 219. An’-imi nāmhi ca (357)

[Ana-imi + nāmhi + ca = 3 words]

Imasaddassa sabbass’ eva ana imi icc ete ādesā honti nāmhi vibhattimhi.

Anena dhammadānena. Sukhitā hotu sā pajā. Iminā Buddhapūjena patvā amataṃ padaṃ.

Nāmhī ti kimatthaṃ? Imesu, imesaṃ, imehi, imebhi.

And when ‘nā’ follows, [there are] ‘ana’ and ‘imi’.
When the inflection ‘nā’ follows, the whole base “ima” is substituted by “ana” or “imi”.
  1. Anena = ima + nā (“ima” is substituted by “ana” (§171); ‘nā’ is substituted by ‘ena’ (§103); ‘a’ of “ana” is elided (§83)).
  2. Iminā = ima + nā (“ima” is substituted by “imi” (§171)).
  1. Anena dhammadānena. Sukhitā hotu sā pajā. (By this gift of the Dhamma, may that community [of beings] be happy.)
  2. Iminā Buddhapūjena patvā amataṃ padaṃ. (Having reached the deathless state [of Nibbāna] by means of this veneration of the Buddha.)

What is the purpose of saying “when ‘nā’ follows”? [This sutta does not apply when ‘nā’ does not follow, such as in:] Imesu, imesaṃ, imehi, imebhi.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
