Kamma-karaṇa-nimittatthesu sattamī

310. 324. Kamma-karaṇa-nimittatthesu sattamī (641)

[Kamma-karaṇa-nimitta-atthesu + sattamī = 2 words]

Kamma-karaṇa-nimittatthesu sattamīvibhatti hoti.

Sundar’ āvuso ime ājīvakā bhikkhūsu abhivādenti (Vin. i, 313). Evaṃ kammatthe.

Hatthesu piṇḍāya caranti (Vin. iii, 125); pattesu piṇḍāya caranti; pathesu gacchanti. Evaṃ karaṇatthe.

Dīpi cammesu haññate (Khu. vi, 172); kuñjaro dantesu haññate (Khu. vi, 172). Evaṃ nimittatthe.

There is the seventh inflection in the meaning of object (kamma), of instrument (karaṇa) and of cause (nimitta).
  1. Sundar’ āvuso ime ājīvakā bhikkhūsu abhivādenti (friend, these good ascetics pay homage to the bhikkhus).

Thus in the meaning of object.

  1. Hatthesu piṇḍāya caranti (they go for alms with the hands).
  2. Pattesu piṇḍāya caranti (they go for alms with the bowls).
  3. Pathesu gacchanti (they go by roads).

Thus in the meaning of instrument.

  1. Dīpi cammesu haññate (the leopard is killed because of its skin).
  2. Kuñjaro dantesu haññate (the elephant is killed because of its tusks).

Thus in the meaning of cause.
