167. 210. Bahubbīhimhi ca (351-2)

[Bahubbīhimhi + ca = 2 words]

Bahubbīhimhi ca samāse sabbanāmavidhānañ ca nāññaṃ kāriyaṃ hoti.

Piyapubbāya, piyapubbānaṃ, piyapubbe, piyapubbassa.

Ce ti kimatthaṃ? Sabbanāmavidhānaṃ hoti. Dakkhiṇapubbassaṃ, dakkhiṇapubbassā, uttarapubbassaṃ, uttarapubbassā.

And in a relative compound.
And in a relative compound, [except the substitution ‘e’ of the first [inflection] ‘yo’] there is no other grammatical operation nor pronominal procedure [such as the substitutions ‘saṃ’, ‘sānaṃ’, etc.].
  1. Piyapubbāya = piyapubbā + smiṃ (here ‘smiṃ’ does not become ‘saṃ’ or ‘sā’; ‘ā’ of “pubbā” is named ‘gha’ (§60); ‘smiṃ’ becomes ‘āya’ (§111); ‘ā’ is elided (§83)).

What is the purpose of saying “ca”? [To allow another] pronominal procedure.

  1. Dakkhiṇapubbassaṃ = dakkhiṇapubba + smiṃ (‘smiṃ’ becomes ‘saṃ’ (§179); ‘s’ is inserted (§63)).

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
