143. 235. Taṃ-mam aṃmhi (322)

[Taṃ-maṃ + aṃmhi = 2 words]

Sabbesaṃ tumha-amhasaddānaṃ savibhattīnaṃ taṃ maṃ icc ete ādesā honti yathāsaṅkhyaṃ aṃmhi vibhattimhi.

Taṃ, maṃ.

Aṃmhi ti kimatthaṃ? Tayā, mayā.

When ‘aṃ’ follows, “taṃ” and “maṃ”.
When the inflection ‘aṃ’ follows, the whole word “tumha” together with the inflection is substituted by “taṃ”, and the whole word “amha” together with the inflection is substituted by “maṃ”.
  1. Taṃ = tumha + aṃ (“tumha” together with the inflection ‘aṃ’ is substituted by “taṃ” (§143)).
  2. Maṃ = amha + aṃ (“amha” together with the inflection ‘aṃ’ is substituted by “maṃ” (§143)).

What is the purpose of saying “when the inflection ‘aṃ’ follows”? [This sutta does not apply when ‘aṃ’ does not follow, such as in] tayā, mayā.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
