129. 222. Imass’ idaṃ aṃ-sisu napuṃsake (305)

[Imassa + idaṃ + aṃ-sisu + napuṃsake = 4 words]

Sabbass’ eva imasaddassa savibhattissa idaṃ-ādeso hoti vā aṃ-sisu napuṃsake vattamānassa.

Idaṃ cittaṃ passasi; idaṃ cittaṃ tiṭṭhati; imaṃ cittaṃ passasi; imaṃ cittaṃ tiṭṭhati.

Napuṃsake ti kimatthaṃ? Imaṃ purisaṃ passasi. Ayaṃ puriso tiṭṭhati.

In the neuter, when ‘aṃ’ and ‘si’ follow, “idaṃ” [of] “ima”.
Optionally, in the neuter gender, when ‘aṃ’ and ‘si’ follow, the whole word “ima” together with the inflection is substituted by “idaṃ”.
  1. Idaṃ = ima + aṃ (“ima” together with the inflection ‘aṃ’ is substituted by “idaṃ” (§129)).

What is the purpose of saying “in the neuter”? [This sutta does not apply when it is not neuter, such as in] imaṃ purisaṃ passasi; ayaṃ puriso tiṭṭhati.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
