130. 225. Amuss’ āduṃ (308)

[Amussa + āduṃ = 2 words]

Sabbass’ eva amusaddassa savibhattissa aduṃ-ādeso hoti aṃ-sisu napuṃsake vattamānassa.

Aduṃ (Khu. v, 34) pupphaṃ passasi; aduṃ (Khu. v, 34) pupphaṃ virocati.

Napuṃsake ti kimatthaṃ? Amuṃ (M. i, 210) rājānaṃ passasi; asu (D. ii, 162) rājā tiṭṭhati.

“Aduṃ” [of] “amu”.
In the neuter gender, when ‘aṃ’ and ‘si’ follow, the whole word “amu” together with the inflection is substituted by “aduṃ”.
  1. Aduṃ = amu + aṃ (“amu” together with the inflection ‘aṃ’ is substituted by “aduṃ” (§130)).

What is the purpose of saying “in the neuter”? [This sutta does not apply when it is not neuter, such as in] amuṃ rājānaṃ passasi; asu rājā tiṭṭhati.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
