108. 90. Smā-smiṃnaṃ vā (276)

[Smā-smiṃnaṃ + vā = 2 words]

Tasmā akārato sabbesaṃ smā smiṃ icc etesaṃ ā-e-ādesā honti vā yathāsaṅkhyaṃ.

Purisā, purisasmā, purise, purisasmiṃ.

Akārato ti kimatthaṃ? Daṇḍinā, daṇḍismiṃ; bhikkhunā, bhikkhusmiṃ.

Optionally, [there are ‘ā’ and ‘e’] of ‘smā’ and ‘smiṃ’.
Optionally, after the letter ‘a’, ‘smā’ and ‘smiṃ’ are substituted by ‘ā’ and ‘e’ respectively.
  1. Purisā = purisa + smā (‘smā’ is substituted by ‘ā’ (§108); ‘a’ is elided (§83)).
  2. Purise = purisa + smiṃ (‘smiṃ’ is substituted by ‘e’ (§108); ‘a’ is elided (§83)).

What is the purpose of saying “after the letter ‘a’”? [This sutta does not apply when there is no ‘a’, such as in] daṇḍinā, daṇḍismiṃ; bhikkhunā, bhikkhusmiṃ.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
