65. 215. Tato sassa ssāya (212)

[Tato + sassa + ssāya = 3 words]

Tato tā-etā-imāto sassa vibhattissa ssāyādeso hoti vā.

Tissāya, etissāya, imissāya.

Vā ti kimatthaṃ? Tissā, etissā, imissā.

After ‘tā’, ‘ssāya’ of ‘sa’.
Optionally, after “tā”, “etā” and “imā”, the inflection ‘sa’ is substituted by ‘ssāya’.
  1. Tissāya = tā + sa (‘ā’ of “tā” is substituted by ‘i’ (§64); ‘sa’ is substituted by ‘ssāya’ (§65)).
  2. Etissāya = etā + sa (‘ā’ of “etā” is substituted by ‘i’ (§63); ‘sa’ is substituted by ‘ssāya’ (§65)).
  3. Imissāya = imā + sa (‘ā’ of “imā” is substituted by ‘i’ (§63); ‘sa’ is substituted by ‘ssāya’ (§65)).

What is the purpose of saying “optionally”? [In the following examples ‘sa’ is not substituted by ‘ssāya’:] tissā, etissā, imissā.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
