Lahumattā tayo rassā

4. 4. Lahumattā tayo rassā (4)

[Lahumattā + tayo + rassā = 3 words]

Tattha aṭṭhasu saresu lahumattā (light-measured) tayo sarā (vowels) rassā (short) nāma honti.

Taṃ yathā? a i u. Iti rassā nāma.

Tena kvattho? Rassaṃ.

The three light-measured [vowels] are short.
Among the eight vowels, the three light-measured [vowels] are called “short”.
Which are these? a i u. These are called “short”.
What is the benefit of that [calling them “short”]? [It is beneficial in suttas such as] “Rassaṃ” (§26).
