Tatth’ odantā sarā aṭṭha

Among them, the eight [letters] ending in ‘o’ are called “vowels”.

3. 3. Tatth’ odantā sarā aṭṭha (3)

[Tattha + o-antā + sarā + aṭṭha = 4 words]

Tattha akkharesu akārādīsu odantā (ending in 'o') aṭṭha akkharā (letters) sarā (vowels) nāma honti.

Taṃ yathā? a ā i ī u ū e o. Iti sarā nāma.

Tena kvattho? Sarā sare lopaṃ (elision).

Among them, the eight [letters] ending in ‘o’ are called “vowels”.
Among those letters, the eight letters beginning with ‘a’ and ending with ‘o’ are called “vowels”.
Which are these? a ā i ī u ū e o. These are called “vowels”.
What is the benefit of that [calling them “vowels”]? [It is beneficial in suttas such as] “Sarā sare lopaṃ” (§12).
