Ālu tabbahule

[There is] ‘ālu’ in [the meaning of] abundance of that.

359. 384. Ālu tabbahule (779)

[Ālu + tabbahule = 2 words]

Ālupaccayo hoti tabbahulatthe.

Abhijjhā assa pakati abhijjhālu (M. i, 21; Khu. i, 256), abhijjhā assa bahulā vā abhijjhālu (M. i, 21; Khu. i, 256). Evaṃ sītālu, dhajālu (JA. ii, 302), dayālu (DA. i, 178).

[There is] ‘ālu’ in [the meaning of] abundance of that.
In the meaning of abundance of that (tabbahula), there is the suffix ‘ālu’.
  1. Abhijjhā assa pakati abhijjhālu (his nature is covetousness: covetous); or, abhijjhā assa bahulā abhijjhālu (much is his covetousness: covetous).

Likewise:

  1. Sītaṃ assa pakati: sītālu (his nature is cold: one who feels much cold).
  2. Dhajo assa pakati, dhajā assa bahulā: dhajālu (its nature is the banner, or, it has many banners: that which has many banners).
  3. Dayā assa pakati, dayā assa bahulā: dayālu (his nature is compassion, or, he has much compassion: one who has much compassion).
