Yassa dātukāmo rocate dhārayate vā taṃ sampadānaṃ

To whom [one] wants to give, to whom [something] is pleasing, or for whom [one] holds [something]: that is “sampadāna”.

Yassa vā dātukāmo, yassa vā rocate, yassa vā dhārayate, taṃ kārakaṃ sampadānasaññaṃ hoti.

Samaṇassa cīvaraṃ dadāti; samaṇassa rocate saccaṃ; Devadattassa suvaṇṇacchattaṃ dhārayate Yaññadatto.

Sampadānam icc anena kvattho? Sampadāne catutthī.

Vā ti vikappanatthaṃ. Dhātu-nāmānaṃ payoge vā upasaggappayoge vā nipātappayoge vā sati atthavikappanatthaṃ vā ti padaṃ payujjati.

To whom [one] wants to give, to whom [something] is pleasing, or for whom [one] holds [something]: that is “sampadāna”.
To whom [one] wants to give, or to whom [something] is pleasing, or for whom [one] holds [something]: that case has the name “sampadāna” (recipient).
  1. Samaṇassa cīvaraṃ dadāti ([he] gives the robe to the ascetic).
  2. Samaṇassa rocate saccaṃ (the truth is pleasing to the ascetic).
  3. Devadattassa suvaṇṇacchattaṃ dhārayate Yaññadatto (Yaññadatta holds the golden parasol for Devadatta).

What is the use of the name “sampadāna” (recipient)? For the use of the name “sampadāna” in the sutta “Sampadāne catutthī” (§293). In the recipient, the fourth [inflection].

“Vā” is in the sense of alternative (vikappana). When there is connection with roots and nouns, or connection with prefixes, or connection with particles, the word “vā” is employed as an alternative of meaning.
