155. 137. Yosv āno (335)

[Yosu + āno = 2 words]

Puma icc evam antassa savibhattissa āno-ādeso hoti yosu vibhattīsu.

Pumāno, he pumāno.

Yosv iti kimatthaṃ? Pumā.

When ‘yo’ follow, ‘āno’.
When the inflections ‘yo’ follow, the end vowel of “puma” together with the inflection is substituted by ‘āno’.
  1. Pumāno = puma + yo (‘a’ of “puma” together with ‘yo’ is substituted by ‘āno’ (§155)).
  2. He pumāno = puma + yo (vocative plural; ‘a’ of “puma” together with ‘yo’ is substituted by ‘āno’ (§155)).

What is the purpose of saying “when ‘yo’ follow”? [This sutta does not apply when ‘yo’ does not follow, such as in] pumā.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
