125. 198. Aṃ napuṃsake (300-1)

[Aṃ + napuṃsake = 2 words]

Sabbass’ eva ntupaccayassa savibhattissa aṃ-ādeso hoti simhi vibhattimhi napuṃsake vattamānassa.

Guṇavaṃ cittaṃ tiṭṭhati; rucimaṃ pupphaṃ virocati.

Simhi ti kimatthaṃ? Vaṇṇavantaṃ agandhakaṃ virūḷhapupphaṃ passasi tvaṃ.

In the neuter, ‘aṃ’.
When the inflection ‘si’ follows and the gender is neuter, the whole suffix ‘ntu’ together with the inflection is substituted by ‘aṃ’.
  1. Guṇavaṃ = guṇavantu + si (‘ntu’ together with the inflection ‘si’ is substituted by ‘aṃ’ (§125); ‘a’ is elided (§83)).

What is the purpose of saying “when ‘si’ follows”? [This sutta does not apply when ‘si’ does not follow, such as in] vaṇṇavantaṃ agandhakaṃ virūḷhapupphaṃ passasi tvaṃ.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
