Dvipade tulyādhikaraṇe kammadhārayo

When two words referring to the same thing [are compounded], there is a “kammadhāraya” (adjectival compound).

[Dvipade + tulyādhikaraṇe + kammadhārayo = 3 words]

Dve padāni tulyādhikaraṇāni yadā samasyante, tadā so samāso kammadhārayasañño hoti.

Mahanto ca so puriso cā ti mahāpuriso (A. i, 346; Khu. i, 64); kaṇho ca so sappo cā ti kaṇhasappo (Vin. i, 24); nīlañ ca taṃ uppalañ cā ti nīluppalaṃ; lohitañ ca taṃ candanañ cā ti lohitacandanaṃ; brāhmaṇī ca sā dārikā cā ti brāhmaṇadārikā; khattiyā ca sā kaññā cā ti khattiyakaññā (M. i, 122; A. i, 526).

Kammadhāraya icc anena kvattho? Kammadhārayasaññe ca.

When two words referring to the same thing [are compounded], there is a “kammadhāraya” (adjectival compound).
When two words referring to the same thing (tulyādhikaraṇa) are compounded, then that compound has the name “kammadhāraya” (adjectival compound).
  1. Mahanto ca so puriso cā ti mahāpuriso (great man).
  2. Kaṇho ca so sappo cā ti kaṇhasappo (black snake (cobra)).
  3. Nīlañ ca taṃ uppalañ cā ti nīluppalaṃ (blue lily).
  4. Lohitañ ca taṃ candanañ cā ti lohitacandanaṃ (red sandal).
  5. Brāhmaṇī ca sā dārikā cā ti brāhmaṇadārikā (brahmin girl).
  6. Khattiyā ca sā kaññā cā ti khattiyakaññā (noble girl).

What is the use of the name “kammadhāraya” (adjectival compound)? For the use of the name “kammadhāraya” in the sutta “Kammadhārayasaññe ca” (§332). Also in an adjectival compound.
