Sarūpānam ekasesv asakiṃ

388. 68. Sarūpānam ekasesv asakiṃ (820-3)

[Sarūpānaṃ + ekaseso + asakiṃ = 3 words]

Sarūpānaṃ padabyañjanānaṃ ekaseso hoti asakiṃ.

Puriso ca puriso ca purisā.

Sarūpānam iti kimatthaṃ? Hatthī ca asso ca ratho ca pattiko ca hatthiassarathapattikā (Khu. iii, 24).

Asakin ti kimatthaṃ? Puriso.

When not [occurring] once only, one only remains of those that have the same form.
When not [occurring] once only, one only (ekasesa) remains of the words and letters that have the same form.
  1. Puriso ca puriso ca purisā (man and man: men).

What is the purpose of saying “sarūpānaṃ” (of those that have the same form)? [To prevent the operation of this rule in cases like]: hatthī ca asso ca ratho ca pattiko ca hatthi-assa-ratha-pattikā (elephant, horse, chariot and foot soldier: elephants, horses, chariots and foot soldiers), [where the words do not have the same form].

What is the purpose of saying “asakiṃ” (not once only)? [To prevent the operation of this rule in cases like]: puriso (man), [where the word occurs once only].
