1. 1. Attho akkharasaññāto

[Attho + akkharasaññāto = 2 words]

Sabbavacanānaṃ attho akkhareh’ eva saññāyate. Akkharavipattiyaṃ (when there is deformity of letters) hi atthassa dunnayatā (difficulty of understanding) hoti, tasmā akkharakosallaṃ (skillfulness with letters) bahūpakāraṃ suttantesu.

The meaning is known by letters.
The meaning of all words is known only by letters. For when there is deformity of letters, meaning becomes difficult to understand. Therefore, skillfulness with letters is very useful in the Discourses.

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
