Vibhāge dhā ca

And [there is] ‘dhā’ in division.

397. 420. Vibhāge dhā ca (836)

[Vibhāge + dhā + ca = 3 words]

Vibhāgatthe ca dhāpaccayo hoti.

Ekena vibhāgena ekadhā. Evaṃ dvidhā (Khu. vii, 179), tidhā (DhA. i, 171), catudhā (D. iii, 153), pañcadhā (AbhA. i, 385), chadhā.

Ceti kimatthaṃ? Sopaccayo hoti. Suttaso (A. ii, 207), byañjanaso (A. i, 479), padaso (Vin. ii, 25).

And [there is] ‘dhā’ in division.
And in the meaning of division (vibhāga), there is the suffix ‘dhā’.
  1. Ekena vibhāgena ekadhā (division by one: in one way).

Likewise:

  1. Dvīhi vibhāgena dvidhā (division by two: in two ways).
  2. Tīhi vibhāgena tidhā (division by three: in three ways).
  3. Catūhi vibhāgena catudhā (division by four: in four ways).
  4. Pañcahi vibhāgena pañcadhā (division by five: in five ways).
  5. Chahi vibhāgena chadhā (division by six: in six ways).

What is the purpose of saying “ca”? [To include that also] there is the suffix ‘so’.

  1. Suttaso (by sutta), byañjanaso (by letter), padaso (by word).
