375. 412. Ekādito dasass’ ī (805)

[Eka-ādito + dasassa + ī = 3 words]

Ekādito dasassa ante īpaccayo hoti vā saṅkhyāpūraṇatthe.

Eko ca dasa ca ekādasa, ekādasannaṃ pūraṇī ekādasī. Pañca ca dasa ca pañcadasa, pañcadasannaṃ pūraṇī pañcadasī (A. i, 142-3). Cattāro ca dasa ca catuddasa, catuddasannaṃ pūraṇī cātuddasī (A. i, 142-3).

Pūraṇeti kimatthaṃ? Ekādasa (Abh. ii, 76), pañcadasa.

After “eka” (one) and others, [there is] ‘ī’ of [the end of] “dasa” (ten).
Optionally, in the meaning of ordinal, after “eka” (one) and others, there is the suffix ‘ī’ at the end of “dasa” (ten).
  1. Eko ca dasa ca ekādasa (one and ten: eleven); ekādasannaṃ pūraṇī ekādasī (the completion of eleven: the eleventh).
  2. Pañca ca dasa ca pañcadasa (five and ten: fifteen); pañcadasannaṃ pūraṇī pañcadasī (the completion of fifteen: the fifteenth).
  3. Cattāro ca dasa ca catuddasa (four and ten: fourteen); catuddasannaṃ pūraṇī cātuddasī (the completion of fourteen: the fourteenth).

What is the purpose of saying “pūraṇa” (completion)? [To prevent the operation of this rule in cases like] “ekādasa” (eleven) and “pañcadasa” (fifteen), [where there is no ordinal].

Without the footnotes: they are on the chapter card.
